Where Are All of the Millennials?

Kaitlyn A. Willing
Dr. William Ashcraft, Faculty Mentor

Church attendance used to be an important part of a majority of households in America, but with the millennial generation, church attendance has become less of a priority. This paper will take a sociological approach to understanding millennials rejection of traditional church. The literature on religious movements sheds light on millennial preferences regarding church affiliation. I will also be looking at and comparing church attendance across three different generations (Baby boomers, Gen X, and Gen Y). My research indicates that millennials are leaving the church because they are feeling unchallenged, feeling unheard, and not being given enough opportunity to reach out to people in need.
