Synthesis of Two Sulfate Esters

Molly S. Vittengl
Dr. Tim Humphry and Dr. Amy Fuller, Faculty Mentors

The atmosphere contains sulfate esters, many of which have properties that are unknown thus far. Two sulfate esters are synthesized so that their chemical characteristics may be further studied. First, pyridinium cis-2-butene-1,4-disulfate is synthesized from cis-2-butene-1,4-diol. Second, lactic acid sulfate is synthesized from sodium lactate. Then, an ion exchange is performed on the lactic acid sulfate with either a resin or a base to attain the necessary form of the product.
