You’ll Feel Like a Queen: The Changing Image of Women During the Women’s Lib Movement
Laura C. Spaeth
Dr. Julia DeLancey and Dr. Sara Orel, Faculty Mentors

Advertising strives to reflect the lifestyle of an average population in order to achieve identification and convince the primary audience of their need for the product. During the second half of the twentieth century, advertisements for appliances and housewares proved problematic in their portrayal of women due to the change in women’s social status. This presentation examines Good Housekeeping advertisements from three decades (1950s, 1960s and 1970s) in order to explain the changes in the portrayal of women during that time.
