Séance: Finding and Expressing the Poetic in Research
Kathryn E. Fritz
Dr. James D'Agostino, Faculty Mentor

In the process of writing for my poetry workshop class last semester, I found myself relying more and more on the use of outside research. Initially I would research in order to add an interesting twist to poems I had already written. But, by the time I was working on my final works for this class, I was researching in order to find poetry in what I was learning, and translating this inherent poetry into a poem. For example, one of the poems I will present, "séance," came out of my research into perfume, the science of it and how it is made and taking notes on whatever I learned that seemed particularly poetic in nature. This presentation will a continuation of this method of writing, of researching various topics, finding the inherent poetry and deeper meaning in what I learn, and turning what I learn into poetry.
