Their Side of the Story: A Multi-Genre Exploration of Autobiography
Katherine V. Murphy
Dr. Jamie D'Agostino, Faculty Mentor

I propose a project that looks at autobiography as a way to tell stories not only of one's self but of others and through others. We all experience life alongside people other than ourselves: parents, friends, schools, etc. One remembers childhood not only as a child, but as a best friend, as a child, as a student in Mrs. Wilson's kindergarten class. Through poetry and short essays, I explore my life through myself and the lens of the other, through the relationships I formed and the experiences I had. Juxtaposing two genres that tell the story of self helped me explore the different genres of my life: the broken story of depression, a lyrical walk on the beach, and the poetic reflection on a photographed moment. I hope to showcase autobiography as a genre encompassing poetry and creative essay-all working together to tell the story of self through multiple perspectives.
