2010 Student Research Conference:
23rd Annual Student Research Conference

Farm to School: K - Infinity
William F. Erker
Dr. Michael Seipel and Dr. Michael I. Kelrick, Faculty Mentors

From the White House back lawn to Ryle Hall and Ray Miller Elementary School, food and education are complimenting each other like peas and carrots. School gardens and local food programs raise questions and address issues concerning health and nutrition, experiential learning, social and emotional development, and perceptions of community, agriculture, and the environment. Through service-learning and independent studies, my research represents an organic learning process that reflects upon, crystallizes and contributes to my past and continued involvement with Ray Millers Green Thumb, The Community Child Development Center in Macon, The University Farm, The Communiversity Garden, and Sodexo. My presentation will evaluate the theory, context, and practice of garden-based education and Farm to School programs.
