A Look at a Middle School Advisory Program:
Christy Yoder♦
Dr. Wendy Miner, Faculty Mentor

This action research study examined the extent to which a first-year advisory program met established goals (e.g., community building, teacher-student advocacy). Advisors completed surveys (n = 48) and advisors and advisees participated in focus group discussions (n = 7). After eight weeks of implementation of the new program, advisors reported working on six of the seven advisory goals. Focus group data suggested making clearer, student-friendly, goals specific to each grade level; providing more opportunities for advisors to collaborate; refiguring the difficult schedule and providing more professional development. Future research should examine in what ways the advisory program evolves.
