Legitimization of the Steelpan through the Expansion of Repertoire
Jason T. Baskin♦
Dr. Michael Bump, Faculty Mentor

Recently invented instruments have struggled to gain recognition among their older, established counterparts. Strategies to obtain a comparable level of legitimacy have included the commissioning of new works to expand the repertoire of the instrument with new music, and the adaptation of repertoire from other instruments to supplement original works and to provide an association with established works. Original works and borrowed repertoire for pan will be discussed. Comparisons to the timelines of other recently established instruments, such as saxophone and marimba, will be made to further illuminate the conceptual framework of the topic. The presentation will conclude with a performance of Paganinis Moto Perpetuo on pan with marimba accompaniment.
