Helping English Language Learners Avoid Unintentional Plagiarism
Talia C. Linneman♦
Dr. Sally Cook, Faculty Mentor

My research examines unintentional plagiarism by English language learners (or "non-native speakers of English") at Truman State University. Through analysis of writing samples, anonymous surveys, and existing research, I will explain common beliefs and behaviors that affect the way students integrate textual research (or "sources") into their compositions. I also discuss whether and how students learn to give proper credit to their sources and avoid plagiarism. This project seeks to help colleges better teach students to appropriately incorporate and cite input from published authors into their academic writing.
