An Introduction to Ceramic Ash Glazes
Melissa D. Fryer
Prof. Wynne Wilbur, Faculty Mentor

I am exploring art that utilizes hand-gathered ash as a primary glaze ingredient. The process of using ash glazes strongly affects the color and texture of the ceramic surface. Research has been compiled on a variety of organic materials that create useable ash, the best glaze recipes to showcase the particular ingredients, and ways to apply the glaze to ceramic surfaces. I have explored these glazes through my own testing and use on my work, as well as through research and contact with other artists who have information about this type of glaze. The history and influential nature of ash glazes are also addressed.
