Measures of Healing: The Effect of Group Music Intervention on Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Northeast Missouri
Christina M. Scheperle♦
Dr. Jay Bulen, Faculty Mentor

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of group music intervention on children with autism. Previous research shows many benefits with the use of music therapy, but a music therapy group does not exist in the northeast Missouri area. A music intervention exploratory program can be created to offer a new venue of intervention to the community, as well as provide an introduction to a valuable therapy field to interested students at Truman State University. Two licensed music therapists will aid in planning the eight-week sessions which will be carried out by two graduate students. An increase in communicative intents and a decrease in negative behaviors are expected. The study will also help to determine if a music therapy program would be beneficial to the area.
