Nancy K. Johnson*, Rebecca N. Verhaeghe, and Teresa L. Nydegger
Dr. Carol Cox, Faculty Mentor

After certification as Red Cross Back Injury Prevention Instructors, Gammans taught three workplace back injury prevention workshops for university physical plant employees. The objectives of this service were to increase Gammans knowledge of worksite safety and injury prevention in order to effectively educate physical plant workers at a small Midwestern University in back injury prevention to reduce the workers risk of injury and accidents on the job. Gammans knowledge of safely issues and injury prevention were satisfactorily increased to educate physical plant workers. Although all participants completed their safety plans, there was no significant difference in their back injury prevention knowledge before and after the workshop. Findings indicate that back injury prevention knowledge did increase slightly. A possible reason for only a slight difference in employees back injury knowledge is that they may have already been well aware of the importance of back injury prevention.
