Indigenous Language Programs and Language Vitality Within United States Tribal Populations

Emily L. Anderson
Dr. Amber Johnson, Faculty Mentor

The primary goal of this study is to examine the current state of Indigenous languages in the United States and determine if there are higher numbers of language speakers in tribes with active language programs. Using content analysis of tribal websites and US Census figures, I analyzed 577 Indigenous tribal populations in the United States and found that the presence of a language program is not associated with higher numbers of language speakers. Given revitalization efforts of individual tribes, more research is needed to accurately assess the current state of Indigenous language in the United States.
