Harry's Home

Shania Montufar
Dr. Heidi Cook, Faculty Mentor

This is one work from an archival series I created last semester using the Harry H. Laughlin (Truman alumnus and Director of the Eugenics Records Office) special collections archive. I use these archives to show the connections between Truman’s history of eugenics, contemporary resistance to campus racism, and the individual ways that non-white community members reconcile the realities of structural racism at TSU (both today and in the past). Outside of portraiture, I photograph spaces associated with the history of eugenics on campus. These spaces include Harry Laughlin’s former home, as displayed in "Harry's Home."
