Synthesis and determination of Lactic Acid Sulfate via x-ray crystallography

Sulfate Esters are naturally occurring aerosolized particles that commonly exist in our atmosphere, yet we know quite little about their actual chemical properties. It has been theorized that they could have a significant ability to combat global warming, but more research is required to know. To that end, the Humphry-Fuller lab focuses on synthesizing known sulfate esters to serve as reference signals in instrumentation at other partner labs. Molecule identities are preliminarily identified via NMR, and then fully characterized with x-ray crystallography at Argonne National Lab in Chicago. Confirmed crystal structures are then sent to Dr. Stone’s mass spectroscopy Lab at Iowa University for further use in researching sulfate esters and their atmospheric effects. This particular research project focuses on synthesizing and confirming the structure of lactic acid sulfate.
