Seeing Eye to Eye with Stoicism and Existentialism: How Two Schools of Thought Have Similar Cognitive Beliefs

Colton Z. Borders
Dr. Dereck Daschke and Dr. Natalie Alexander, Faculty Mentors

With this paper, I plan to analyze the similarities between the schools of Roman Stoicism and 20th century Existentialism, in regards to their views on expectations in the relation of the world, self, and others, as well as how these ideas are supported by those who study Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT. I will break down how both schools of thought view their limitations in regards to how much control they have on the outside world. With the self, I will explain how both schools see the individual who uses reason consciousness to choose action and will, and how both schools report that our own formation of character is created by viewing others. Within each section, I will use philosophers from both schools to show the similarity of belief.
