Recipe for Disaster ... or Success? -- The Lived Experience of Mental Illness

This case study was conducted for the purpose of understanding the unique lived experience of a person with mental illness involved in an outpatient psychosocial rehabilitation program. Nursing diagnoses, outcomes, and interventions were selected from the standardized nursing language of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association, the Nursing Outcomes Classification taxonomy, and the Nursing Interventions Classification taxonomy. The resulting nursing care plan was implemented during five nurse-client interactions occurring over a two-month period. Emergent themes that arose from this interaction were social interaction skills and knowledge of medications and disease process. Caring themes utilized by the nursing student included active listening, presence, acceptance, and teaching. A narrative with illustrations was developed to portray the client’s lived experience. The metaphor of cooking and learning how to maintain this skill is used to represent the daily management of serious and persistent mental illness.
