I’ll Help You Carry On:
An Examination of Black Male-Male Friendships
at the College Level

A paucity of information on the nature, structure, and quantity of Black male interpersonal relationships exists. The topic of Black male friendships is not typically covered in social research. This study explored the importance of interpersonal friendships among Black males at a small liberal arts college. This research consists of a comparison of male-male friendships at the collegiate level to friendships of working class and upwardly mobile Black men. In conjunction with an extensive literature review and collection of personal accounts from Black men on Truman’s campus, demographic information on participants was collected and analyzed in comparison to the results of similar sociological studies.
