The Effects of Neoliberal Policies on Brazilian Society
Jasmyni Dias
Dr. Marc Becker, Faculty Mentor

Brazil has the ninth economy in the world yet it is a country marked by growing social inequality. Reasons why Brazil is so far behind in social developments can be traced back to colonial era, but more recent economical policies have also helped to shape the country’s income and wealth distribution. The policies implemented by neoliberal presidents, for example, are responsible for the privatizations of the most profitable industries in the country. This resulted in growing rates of unemployment among other things. This paper will discuss the implications of neoliberal policies on the social aspects of Brazil and show that a neoliberal agenda as it was implemented in Brazil is detrimental to society because its main focus is not the elimination of social problems but the increase of profit for big corporations.
