Women, Men, and Disney’s Depiction:
Explicit Sex Roles in Motion Picture Songs
Elizabeth A. Gentry
Dr. Sally Cook, Faculty Mentor
Disney animated films are constantly criticized for their portrayals of males and females in stereotypical gender roles. This presentation looks beyond the illustrations and actions and focuses on the songs, several of which explicitly define how men and women should behave. It is valuable to analyze these songs for their possible harmful effects on children. Movies produced by the Walt Disney Company are examined because they are some of the most pervasive influences in an average American child’s life and they are something that most audiences can relate to and recognize.
