Keeping Science Simple: An Interactive Learning Module

Performance in content areas such as social studies, science, and math may be compromised for children who have below average language skills. A research group of Communication Disorders majors has created a 3-part PowerPoint module entitled “The Water Cycle,” as a software tool to aid fifth grade special education students in Heath, Ohio. In response to an outline from the classroom teacher, examples were developed to illustrate precipitation, evaporation, and condensation. The modules incorporate digital photos, short video clips, sounds, and clip art designed to highlight these important concepts. The challenge was to keep the language simple so that the key vocabulary would be easy to grasp and recall. Even more important than improved test scores, is the potential to improve students’ self-esteem and the respect of their peers. Demonstrations, classroom teacher testimonials, and hands-on experiments will be included in this presentation.
