Comparison of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis and Skinfold Measurements in Female College Track Athletes

The purpose of this study was to compare the new and old models of the Body Logic Bioelectrical Impedance instruments with skinfold measurements. Twenty-one female track athletes (age= 19.3 ± 1.3 yrs, weight= 57.4 ± 10.0 kg, height= 168.9 ± 5.1 cm) from a small, Midwestern college were measured using Jackson Pollock 3-site skinfold equation and three Bioelectrical Impedance formulas. Results of this study showed no significant difference across the four methods (F= 2.00, P= 0.12). While there was not a significant difference between the old Body Logic equation and the new Body Logic athletic equation, there was an absolute average difference of 1.3%. In conclusion, body composition can be estimated in college aged female athletes using Bioelectrical Impedance or skinfolds. Results of this study may be of interest to athletes, coaches, and athletic trainers who are searching for an easy, noninvasive, and accurate technique to estimate body composition.
