First-year College Student Attendance at Truman State University Basketball Games

Truman has experienced excellent athletic success over the past seven years at the conference and NCAA Division II level. However, despite this success Truman athletic teams still experience disappointing support at home events. The purpose of this study was to investigate why first-year students choose to attend or not attend basketball games and what strategies might improve attendance. One of two surveys, “attendance” or “non-attendance,” were administered to a total of 90 (M=36, F=54) first-year students regarding their attendance and support of basketball. Of students “not attending” the game 68% felt uninformed about upcoming athletic events, 90% were unaware of the student appreciation award and 68% had never used gobulldogs.truman.edu. Nineteen percent of students surveyed did not know that it is free to attend athletic events. Results of this study maybe useful to other NCAA Division II and III schools who are interested in increasing student attendance at athletic events.
