From Sorting Mail to Paying Bills: An Architectural History of Kirksville's City Hall
Adrienne R. Lawson
Dr. Cole Woodcox, Faculty Mentor
Built in response to the higher demand for daily mail service to Kirksville, Missouri, the old Post Office, now Kirksville City Hall, was built in 1905 on the corner of Franklin and McPherson Streets. Over the years, the building has gone through many renovations and structural changes. This research paper discusses the history of the building that once stood as the Kirksville Post Office and also details its progression into becoming City Hall. The reason for the change will be investigated in a historical and functional context, as well as the question of how the space is used, or in the case of a missing second floor, unused. The methodologies of economics and history will be applied to assess the building and place exactly where it is in the culture and history of Kirksville and Adair County.
