Masculine Struggle in “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber”

This paper is an exploration of gender representations in Hemingway’s short story, “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber.” The paper focuses on the struggle of the main character, Francis Macomber, to affirm his masculinity against the challenges presented by the other characters, specifically Wilson and Margot, who embody masculinity and anti-masculinity, respectively. The paper explores the story as a critique of traditional gender roles, arguing that these roles are imagined, that is they are real only as much as they are acted out. If this performance fails, gender falls apart.
