Rachel A. Mintle* and Dawn M. Juon
Prof. Liz Jorn, Faculty Mentor
The purpose of this study was to examine the nutritional habits of male and female college students. Females (n=104, Wt.=143.5 ±30.0lbs) and males (n=46, Wt.=183.6 ±40.0lbs) completed a dietary habits survey as part of a required lifetime health class at a small, Midwestern university. Results of this survey indicated that 8% of the students were vegetarians compared with approximately 2.5% of the total U.S. population. Thirty-one percent of students indicated that they don’t eat breakfast on a regular basis and 14.7% stated that they don’t consume any servings from the fruit group as part of their daily routine. Calcium consumption is always a concern and in this survey 8.7% of the students recorded that they do not drink milk. The results of this research may be of interest to health educators and health-care providers on college campuses as they design classes and programs to educate students regarding good nutritional habits.
