"Satisfying the Muse": The Creative Process in Music Composition

The creative process in music is considered by many to be a mysterious one that transcends logical explanation. This lecture recital will explore and, in some ways, help dispell this romantic notion. While it is true that composers seek inspiration for their musical work, a composer's musical ideas must be carefully crafted into a viable creative artifact for the work to be truly successful. In this presentation, several Truman State student composers will discuss the creative process as it applies to a specific original work in their repertoire. The compositions under discussion will be heard as part of the presentation. The music under discussion has been composed by members of the "Mostly Live Composers Society", a group of Truman State student and faculty who are involved in the creation of new music for concert performance.
