The Correlation Between Body Dimensional Measurements in Relation to Relative Bench Press Strength Categorized by Sport

The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between body dimensional measurements in relation to relative bench press strength categorized by sport. Varsity athletes (8 track athletes, 16 baseball players, 15 wrestlers, and 65 football players) were measured for arm and chest circumference, arm length, and height. Percent body fat and lean body mass were derived from skin caliper measurements and the Jackson-Pollock generalized prediction equation, respectively. Bench press strength was assessed by 1-RM. Through a prediction equation developed from the original sample group (N=104), 42 of 56 football players could be measured within 10% of their actual 1-RM bench press using height, weight, arm circumference, arm length, and chest circumference as variables. Wrestlers demonstrated the greatest relative bench press strength in relation to body dimensional variables and body mass.
