Synthesis of Sulfoquinovosyl Diacylglycerol as a Potential Cancer Cell Inhibitor

Sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerol (SQDG) is a glucose derivative that contains a sulfate moiety, glycerol group and two fatty acid chains. SQDG is naturally found in many green leaf plants, especially spinach, and is found to be a significant cancer cell inhibitor in vitro and in vivo. In order to further study SQDG, a reliable and economical synthesis needs to be established. A ten-step synthesis scheme is being followed and investigated for improvements. Currently, the first four reactions have been accomplished with the products characterized by melting point, IR and NMR spectroscopy. Work on the fifth reaction and investigation of a 2-deoxyglucose derivative is expected to be accomplished by the Student Research Conference.
