Art and Artifacts from the E. M. Violette Museum

Wendell Cordle, a 1925 graduate of Northeast Missouri State Teachers College, taught in Alaska, the Philippines, and Malaysia. In 1946 he made a large donation to present-day Truman State University of objects he and his wife collected while living abroad. Objects from this collection along with explanatory material will be on display in Pickler Memorial Library during the week of the Student Research Conference. These items have been the subject of original research by students in Art 224: Non-Western Art. These represent examples of functional and decorative objects such as a basket, decorated wooden bowls, games, and knives, along with model totems made for the early twentieth century tourist market and a mask from New Guinea which is not part of the Cordle collection. Although Truman State University's E. M. Violette Museum is temporarily closed, these objects give a glimpse of what the University has in its permanent collection.
