Samantha L. Weatherford* and Kimberly P. Abts
Dr. Paula Cochran and Dr. Janet Gooch, Faculty Mentors
Oral peripheral examinations are frequently conducted by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to check the structure and function of a client's oral mechanism (teeth, lips, tongue, etc). This information is crucial for accurate diagnosis, referral, and treatment of some speech disorders. School-based clinicians (618) across Missouri were surveyed with regard to their oral peripheral examination practices. (Final response rate is not known at the time of this proposal.)The survey asked about SLP's training, caseload, and regular administration of oral peripheral exams. Respondents were asked to rate the importance of oral peripheral examinations and their clinical value. Results suggest that there is wide variation in the knowledge and practices of Missouri school clinicians, many of whom wish they had better expertise in this aspect of clinical practice.
