An Examination of Postcolonial Feminism in Assia Djebar's Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade
Emily E. Walker
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

This paper will focus on the ways in which Assia Djebar, in Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade, explores how her knowledge of Arabic and French affects her personal identity. Djebar addresses the guilt she feels in knowing French, the language of Algeria's colonizer, because it separates her from her Arabic heritage. However, Djebar acknowledges both languages as intrinsic parts of herself that allow her to recognize her embodiment as the intersection where both cultures mesh to create a hybrid identity. Djebars knowledge of both Arabic and French empowers her to tell the stories of her countrywomen which otherwise would be lost.
