Liszt: Three Concert Études, No. 3 in D flat Major
Julie M. Jackson
Dr. Yukari Yano, Faculty Mentor
The third piece from Three Concert Études, published in 1849, is one example of Franz Liszt's distinctive style of writing. Each of Liszt's études focus on a certain technique; in this particular étude he concentrates on rapid arpeggios and hand crossing. The simple melody of eighth notes is heard above and sometimes in between the arpeggios, played by alternating crossing hands. The rise and fall of the melody elicits the feeling of a sigh, which is the reason this piece is commonly known as "Un Sospiro", Italian for "A Sigh". The challenge presented to the performer in this étude is to sound flowing and effortless to the listener.
