The World That Is Handed to Us

I propose the presentation of an original poetic sequence which firmly establishes itself in the literary tradition of the meditative lyric. This tradition has undergone radical critical and creative revision recently, undergoing a thorough interrogation from all corners of postmodernism. My poetic sequence, "The World That Is Handed to Us," seeks to simultaneously question and preserve the continuities of lyric poetry. My poems work in the shadow of recent theory's destabilizing of lyric subjectivity, but they strive to maintain a meaningful connection to the tradition. My work is both experimental and traditional; I experiment with form and content, while celebrating what I see as a vital connection to the past. Certain scholars and poets have informed the ways in which I think about and write my own poems; among them, the former U.S. poet laureate Robert Hass has had the most lasting influence.
