Wind Energy
Joe C. Schaeperkoetter
Dr. Matthew M. Beaky, Faculty Mentor

At this particular time in our nation's history the need for alternative energy cannot be over-emphasized. Dependence on foreign oil is an economically volatile situation. An incredible amount of evidence suggests that we are doing irreparable harm to our environment with the burning of fossil fuels. Perhaps the greatest challenge to our generation will be pioneering the move towards more sustainable and cleaner forms of energy production. I will discuss the viability of Wind Energy as a solution to the energy problem. This will include both the benefits and limitations inherent in wind energy production. I will also take a look at some of the physics involved in maximizing the conversion from wind to electrical energy, with a concentration on blade size, shape and material.
