Mental Health at Truman
Connor C. Sexton
Dr. Roberta Donahue, Faculty Mentor
Mental health has become an increasing concern on college campuses in recent years. Truman participates in Missouri's Partners in Prevention as part of an effort to better monitor and improve its students' mental health. This coalition of 12 Missouri universities conducts an annual internet survey called the Missouri College Health Behavior Survey. The purpose of this presentation is to compare the results for Truman students from 2007 (n=401) and 2008 (n=296). The results included data that showed a decrease in mental health from 2007 to 2008. For example in 2007 24.4% of students said that they had experienced depression and 27.7% said they had experienced anxiety in the past year. In 2008 those numbers grew to 38.9% and 41.2% respectively. These numbers indicate a need for Truman to educate its students on how to address these problems.
