The Mystic Trombone: An Analysis of The Conditions of a Solitary Bird for Trombone and Passive Piano

Composers writing for trombone in the 20th century explored the various elements of sound effects that the performer could utilize. Lawrence Borden did just this with his composition The Conditions of a Solitary Bird for trombone and passive piano. This piece is based on the poem of the same title by 16h century Catholic mystic San Juan de la Cruz and makes use of the many extended techniques for the trombone including synthetic resonance, multiphonics, flutter tonguing, and microtuning.
