Structural and Electronic Properties of Copper-Nickel Oxides

Ni1-xCuxO is a solid solution with the rocksalt packing structure of nickel oxide (NiO) where up to 25% of the Ni2+ cations have been replaced by Cu2+ cations. Nickel oxide is well known for its antiferromagnetic properties. Studying the effect on those properties caused by replacing a quantity of the 3d8 Ni2+ with the 3d9 Cu2+ could lead to better understanding of the metal oxide system. Ni1-xCuxO solid solutions were prepared over a range of concentrations, particularly where the phase separation was previously known to occur. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) was used to characterize the bulk and determine the phase separation and crystal properties. Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) was then employed to study the surface composition.
