A Recording in the Making: The Sacred Art Songs of Frances Ridley Havergal
Nicole M. Robertson♦
Mr. David Chalkley (The Havergal Trust) and Dr. Thomas Hueber, Faculty Mentors

Frances Ridley Havergal was born in England on December 14, 1836. For those who are familiar with her name today, most probably recognize her as one of the most accomplished hymn writers of her time. By her death at age 42, she had become widely known throughout America and Western Europe. It is estimated that four million of her books were published between 1870 and 1900. Aside from her success with hymn-writing and poetry, she also composed many art songs, mostly sacred. These songs have been long forgotten in the music world and have yet to be recorded. Working with the editor of an upcoming series of volumes about Frances' work, this author will discuss the history surrounding these art songs and the current endeavor to record them. A performance of one of the art songs will be heard live.
