Formal Functions: Experiments in Poetic Structure
Shawn M. Bodden
Dr. James D'Agostino, Faculty Mentor
With my collection of poems, I seek to explore the role of the visual, formal side of poetry; by developing alternative structures and arrays for my poems, I explore the contributions the physical appearance of a poem adds to its meaning, as well as the capacity of a poem's structure to draw in and interest readers. By meshing traditional forms of poetry with lines that abandon the standard position on the page and even the direction of the text itself, I endeavor to utilize the poem's visual form to allow for new means of expression. The intent to expand and experiment upon traditional poetic structures extends the poetry to an interdisciplinary field, meshing the fields of language, art, and graphic design. These poems pursue an understanding of the relation between the verbal and visual, investigating the negotiations between form and content that is present in all poetry.
