Shamanism and Mystical Chants In Nepal
Prayash Sharma Pyakurel
Prof. Shirley McKamie, Faculty Mentor

Mystical practices such as shamanism and witchcraft are known to generally exist among primal or indigenous cultures. However, these practices are not always confined to primal cultures but often exist in societies that follow, and even blend, such world religions as Hinduism and Tantric Buddhism. For example, mystical healing practices are still prevalent in places like Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, as well as in Solukhumbu, a rural district in the Himalayas. The rites performed in these places vary according to castes and religion; however, these local healers and witches have their own tutelary deities, thereby giving birth to a unique religious music.
