Characterization of a novel transcript containing a small open reading frame that is expressed during latency in bovine herpes virus 1 (BHV-1)

Contrary to previous studies it has been shown that the latency associated transcript (LAT) is not the only transcript expressed during latency in bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1). Recently, a region known as ORF-E was shown to be expressed as well. Studies have shown that the ORF-E region is expressed early after infection and suggested that it was being expressed as an immediate early or early mRNA during productive infection in cultured cell lines. The aim of this work was to determine if the ORF-E region of the BHV-1 genome was expressed in immediate early infection. Bovine kidney (MDBK) cells were treated with cycloheximide then infected with BHV-1 virus (Cooper strain), so that only immediate early viral-mRNAs would be expressed. The results of this study demonstrate that ORF-E is not expressed in immediate early transcription further implying that it is expressed during the early phase of transcription.
