Eastern and Central Europe in Transition: Is There a Recipe for Success?
Stefan D. Popov
Dr. Xiaofen Chen and Dr. Terry Olson, Faculty Mentors

This research paper exhibits how six Eastern and Central European Countries-Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, The Czech Republic, Poland and Hunagary performed economically for the period 1992-1999 and how various economical factors such as trade volume, trade liberalization, trade deficits, inflation, inflow of FDI and foreign assistance influenced their level of success. The paper uses a linear regression model that produces statistically significant results that for the most part come out as predicted. The results disprove the mercantile views of trade by showing that decreasing the trade deficits had a detrimental effect on economic well-being. The results also show that foreign direct investment can have a detrimental effect on economic development in the short run.
