The Influence of Hip-Hop on Japanese Youth:
Who Listens to Hip-Hop?

Hip-hop and rap have been prevalent in today’s society for more than thirty years, continuing earlier influences of jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock. It has become one of the biggest cultural bridges between African-Americans and the world. Countries spanning from America to Zimbabwe have heard this influential sound of lyrical poetry underlined with steadily complicated backbeats and rhythms. Although there is evidence that many countries in both the Western and Eastern Hemispheres have been introduced to hip-hop and rap, it is unclear how the various societies are impacted by its sounds and messages. This study focuses on Japanese listeners by using a survey to determine connections between hip-hop listening and social condition.
