Exploring Midwestern Environments to Decode Inspiration and Unlock the Inner Professional
During this project, I travelled between 5 different locations in the Midwest ranging from deep forests to bustling cities. The goal was to gather information about each one (sights, sounds, experiences, etc.) in an effort to create a musical composition with 5 movements based on each location.
Throughout the project, I backpacked into the location, set up camp, and explored the environment as much as possible while living there. Drinking instant coffee and eating canned chicken, I journaled, took photos, and recorded sounds around me along with myself freely improvising on the guitar. Then, I returned home and began compiling all of my materials into full compositions.
By the end of the research period, I had only finished 2 (perhaps 3) of the 5 movements that I originally intended to complete. But, along the way, I discovered many new sources of inspiration, and methods of working through creative challenges.
