Knowledge of Osteoporosis and Osteopenia Across the Lifespan

Mary G. Simonsen
Dr. Brandy Schneider, Faculty Mentor

Introduction: Osteoporosis and osteopenia are both conditions that cause the decrease of bone density increasing the risk for fracture potentially leading to disability and increased medical costs. Past research has supported the claim that adequate knowledge is essential to the reduction of risk of osteoporosis. Purpose: The purpose of this project is to research the knowledge of osteoporosis and osteopenia across the lifespan in a rural community. Methods: An electronic mixed methods survey was sent to adults in rural communities(N=87) across the lifespan(M=33.87 and SD=17.86) through social media. Results: Regarding perceived conditions knowledge, 50% felt no confidence, 30% felt confident, and 20% felt extremely confident. When providing qualitative descriptions, the 45-59 year old group answered more correctly (52% accuracy) than any other age group. Conclusion: Providing educational resources regarding osteopenia and osteoporosis in rural areas is essential for improving overall health for the aging individual.
