Biblical Authority Over American Society Through Inerrancy

Lawson G. Huff
Dr. Dereck Daschke, Faculty Mentor

The presentation will be covering the theological assertion of Biblical Inerrancy within Protestant America and how it has been used over the last 100 years. An essential claim is that adhering to inerrancy allows the interpretor of the Bible to then wield authority. What once was a reaction to historical criticism of the Bible has become, over the years, an effective way to influence the political sphere in this country. The presentation will review 3 major time periods: the emergence of Fundamentalism in the 1920s, the rise of the Moral Majority in the 70s and 80s, and the rise of Christian Nationalism today. Key figures and moments will be analyzed along with the necessary context of the given time period to best explain the transformation.
