A Meta-Analysis of Attachment Styles in Young Adults With Early Caregiving Instability

Olivia E. Jamison
Dr. Katrina Schmerold, Faculty Mentor

Background: Early caregiving experiences play a critical role in the development of attachment, shaping individuals’ expectations of relationships across the lifespan. While prior research links childhood maltreatment and instability to insecure attachment, findings vary across studies and often focus on extreme forms of adversity. This meta-analysis examines the overall relationship between early caregiving instability and attachment insecurity (anxiety and avoidance) in young adulthood, while accounting for variation across study characteristics.
