Crystal and Molecular Structure of Aromatic Charge Transfer Complexes

X-ray diffraction can be used to determine the crystal and molecular structures of the adducts of electron rich (donor) aromatic compounds with electron deficient (acceptor) aromatic compounds to give more insight into the nature of the charge-transfer bond. These complexes are made when acceptor and donor molecules come together because of different partial charges in each aromatic pi cloud. One acceptor, 2,7-dinitro-9-fluorenone (DNF), has been tried. Whereas many donor combinations with 2,4,5,7-tetranitro-9-fluorenone have been produced and analyzed by other researchers in this lab, thirteen different combinations of alkyl-substituted aromatic compounds with DNF did not produce products. Currently the acceptors 1,3-dinitrobenzene, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and para-nitrotoluene are being combined with various alkyl-substituted donor aromatic compounds to produce crystals for subsequent analysis.
