Bottles: Expressions of Struggles

Throughout history in a variety of cultures, the ceramic bottle form has fulfilled conflicting roles. Besides serving as a functional, utilitarian item, it was often used and appreciated as a purely decorative form. These dual roles have been explored in contemporary ceramics, with the work taking on symbolic and metaphorical meanings while still maintaining a sense of functionality. This exhibit will include a series of bottles that metaphorically exemplify personal struggles with cultural assimilation and the increasing awareness of individualism. It will consist of twenty inch bottles which relate to one another as a series. In addition, the display will include sketches and written information that support the concepts explored in each ceramic piece.
